WESTERN GROUP ON EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS Representatives to the Group on Education Affairs Sections The WGEA Nominations and Executive Committees are happy to announce the following appointments as WGEA representatives to the newly created sections of the Group on Educational Affairs. They have provided a brief biographical sketch and contact information. Section on Undergraduate Education Gerald B. Merenstein, M.D. Term expires: Spring 2001 Gerald B. Merenstein, M.D. is currently Professor of Pediatrics and Senior Associate Dean, Education at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Child Health Associate/Physician Assistant Program. He teaches medical students and PA students in the nursery, in problem-based learning and other courses throughout the year. He is active in many organizations and has served on many national committees, and task forces for organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Merensteins scientific interest and numerous publications have focused on perinatal medicine, the delivery of health care and medical education. He is the senior pediatric editor of the 4th edition of Guidelines for Perinatal Care, Handbook of Pediatrics (18th edition -1997) and Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care (4th edition - 1998). Section on Graduate Medical Education Susan Ellis, Ed. S. Term expires: Spring 2004 Ms. Ellis received her Educational Specialist degree with a concentration in Educational Psychology from the University of Arizona. She has been employed at the UA College of Medicine for eight years, providing computer and instructional support to faculty and students. In her current position as Faculty Development Specialist, her efforts have been focussed on refining instruction and implementing active learning techniques into health science education. In support of this, Ms. Ellis has recently completed production of a training tape for facilitators of problem-based learning courses. In addition to several series of workshops aimed at improving instruction in large lecture-based courses, Ms. Ellis works on an individual basis with faculty across colleges of the Arizona Health Sciences Center. Ms. Ellis is also actively involved in residency education. She has worked extensively with several departments, among these, Psychiatry, Family and Community Medicine and Pediatrics, to assist residents with their roles as teachers. Her current research involves assessing the needs of residency programs in order to assist residents with designing and implementing teacher training activities within their respective departments. Section on Continuing Medical Education Ronald A. Edelstein, Ed.D. Term expires: Spring 2003 Dr. Ronald A. Edelstein is Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine in the College of Medicine at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Edelstein's background is in education and clinical psychology and he holds a doctorate in Educational Psychology from UCLA. Dr. Edelstein joined Drew in 1978 and has been the Director of Continuing Medical Education since 1987. Research interests included: learning and memory issues in professions education, curriculum design and evaluation, medical informatics, primary care medical education, and professional certification issues in CME. Section on Research in Medical Education Frederic M. Wolf, Ph.D. Term expires: Spring 2004 Fredric M. Wolf, Ph.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Education, School of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Health Services, School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Washington. Before coming to the University of Washington in June 1997, Fred was Professor of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education and Director of the Learning Resource Center and Laboratory for Computing, Cognition, & Clinical Skills at the University of Michigan Medical School. His research interests include the evaluation, dissemination and adoption of new technology, clinical decision making and judgment, and the social-psychological aspects of chronic illness. He is the author of Meta-analysis: Quantitative Methods for Research Synthesis published by Sage Publications (1986; 2nd edition in preparation) and over 100 articles in professional journals. He spent part of 1995 as an NIH Fogerty Senior International Fellow at the UK Cochrane Centre and Green College, University of Oxford. He is an active participant in the International Cochrane Collaboration, serving as an editor for the Cochrane Airways (Asthma) Collaborative Review Group and on the advisory committees for the Cochrane Effective Professional Practice Collaborative Review Group and San Antonio Cochrane Center. He also is a member of the Cochrane Training/Education and Statistical Methods Working Groups, and has designed evaluation studies and educational programs in informatics and evidence-based medicine. |
