Abstract
Dual Degree Program: Master of Clinical Research (MSCR)
Specialty: Urology
Keywords: Clinical Research, Statistics, Methods
Motivation: I pursued the MSCR program because it offered structured education in statistics and clinical research methodology. As an aspiring urologist, I recognized the significance of dedicating my Discovery Year to refining my research abilities. This was essential for me to delve into my interests in urological research, specifically focusing on sexual medicine, workforce diversity, and health disparities.
Objectives: My primary goal this year was to publish a paper as the lead author. Throughout this process, I aimed to have a strong sense of control and confidence in my scientific methods and statistical analyses. It was important for me to feel empowered and assured in the way I conducted my research and interpreted the data.
Activities: Throughout the MSCR program, I completed various courses covering fundamental aspects of clinical trials, such as ethics, IRB approval, advanced statistics, and methodology. Moreover, I gained valuable insights into grant writing and became acquainted with various funding opportunities tailored for junior faculty and beyond. Additionally, I honed my skills in presenting research effectively, further enhancing my ability to communicate scientific findings.
Lessons Learned: While the MSCR degree proved to be as challenging as anticipated, the sense of personal growth and accomplishment I experienced made each obstacle worthwhile. The knowledge and skills I acquired are invaluable assets that I am confident will shape my future endeavors positively. To anyone contemplating pursuing the MSCR, I highly recommend tapping into the wealth of expertise offered by the professors. I was impressed by the individualized support and guidance provided by the program directors and multiple professors, which significantly enriched my learning experience.
Summary: The knowledge I gained in the MSCR program will not only enhance my current research projects but will also serve as a solid foundation for my future work as an academic physician. I am excited to apply these skills to contribute meaningfully to the field of medicine, whether it's through conducting clinical trials, addressing healthcare disparities, or advocating for patient-centered care.
