Simulation Training for Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®)

UCLA offers a one day simulation training course in anesthesia crisis management. As one of ASA’s endorsed programs, our course can be used toward Part IV (Practice Performance Assessment & Improvement) of Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®). Participation in simulation at an ASA-endorsed center is encouraged for all diplomates, however as of April 23, 2015, ABA announced MOCA 2.0 with changes in what is required for recertification. The ASA has issued a clarification to help diplomates determine if simulation is a requirement or an option:

"For diplomates whose five- or 10-year cycle ends December 31, 2015:
ABA diplomates are still required to complete one of these options for Part 4 – an ASA PPAI module, a MOCA simulation course at an ASA-endorsed center, a self-directed case evaluation, a quality improvement project through the Multi-Specialty Portfolio Program or a Part 4 activity through another ABMS Member Board. If you haven’t yet completed one, you must do so before the end of this year."

"For diplomates whose five- or 10-year cycle ends in 2016 or thereafter:
A MOCA simulation course at an ASA-endorsed center will continue to count toward the Part 4 requirement in the ABA MOCA 2.0 program and will be heavily weighted. It will continue to count for five years of Part 4 credit, as it does now."

Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org, for detailed MOCA® requirements and for questions related to MOCA 2.0. MOCA® and Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® are registered trademarks of The American Board of Anesthesiology, Inc.

What to Expect in a MOCA® Course

Simulation for MOCA - The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)

Please watch the Simulation for MOCA video from the ABA above to learn more about what to expect in a MOCA® course.

Course Objectives

  1. Provide management of hemodynamic and respiratory critical events in anesthesia.
  2. Practice up-to-date techniques in a safe learning environment.
  3. Reflect on optimal teamwork, leadership and communication skills required in crisis management.

"Simulation-based learning embeds the lessons of the experience deeply into the participant without risk to patients."

Randolph Steadman, M.D., Director, UCLA Simulation Center

Course Highlights

  1. Your performance will not be graded. THIS IS NOT A TEST!
  2. Experiential learning: You will be in the “hot seat” as the primary anesthesiologist for at least one scenario, and observe or help out in other scenarios
  3. Small course size: No more than 5 participants per 1 faculty instructor per course

Enrolled participants will experience or observe various clinical scenarios carefully selected to represent common and infrequent critical events in anesthesia practice. Each participant will play the role of the primary anesthesiologist for at least one scenario and observe or serve as a secondary responder for the other scenarios. Each scenario is followed by a group debriefing. Participants will refresh their skills in managing critical incidents, team interactions and resource utilization.
