Poster Abstract
The Global Health Program (GHP) at the David Geffen School of Medicine prepares students to advance health equity by providing them with knowledge, skills, and structural competency in global health through coursework, pre-departure trainings, clinical and research experiential learning at partner sites, mentoring, and leadership opportunities. Global health education has been an important space for medical students to reflect on their positionality and strengthen their commitment to health equity, especially as a global pandemic exposed longstanding health disparities in medicine. In this context, the GHP re-designed its Global Health Equity Pathway to prioritize the following: 1) Advocacy 2) Critical reflection 3) Ethics 4) Building collaborative and equitable partnerships, and 5) Transformative learning. The GHP adjusted its learning environment to include more small-group and peer-based learning in its curriculum with attention to power dynamics, justice, equity, and supporting sustainable partnerships. We will share how these important changes in our approach to global health education have positioned trainees to strive for more equitable healthcare for diverse patient populations.
